Vermillion Community Celebrates May Crowning

Students representing St. John the Baptist Catholic School lead the all-parish rosary recitation prior to the traditional May Crowning mass on Sunday.

Catholics all over the world celebrate this annual tradition during the month of May to celebrate and honor the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, and Queen of Heaven and Earth. The mass begins with a procession of children and first communicants dressed in finery, all carrying fresh spring flowers to place at the feet of the Mother of God, while the congregation sings traditional, Marion hymns like "Hail, Holy Queen," "Immaculate Mary", or "Ave Maria."  The crowning tradition involves placement of a crown on the statue of St. Mary.

During the month of May, the public is invited to recite the rosary with the students of St. John the Baptist School each Monday at 3:00 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Church in Vermillion, MN, 5 miles southwest of Hastings.
