Iowa Veterans to Ruck March Game Ball from Minneapolis to Iowa City to Raise Awareness for Veteran Suicides

Members of The University of Iowa Veterans Association (UIVA) and local volunteers will be ruck marching over 280 miles from TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis to Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City starting Sunday Nov. 8, 2015 to raise awareness for veteran suicide.

Participants will march in teams of three while carrying ruck sacks with 22 pounds in them as a symbol of the 22 veterans who take their own lives by suicide each day. The 22 pounds will be comprised of personal momentous of participates that honors their military service or represents the service of a loved one. Participants will also be caring an American flag and the UIVA guidon.

The ruck march passed through Hampton, Minnesota at approximately 8:30 p.m. oSunday, Nov. 8.

Along with the game ball for the Iowa Hawkeye, Golden Gopher football game, participates will also be caring an American flag and the UIVA guidon.  Guidons are traditional military flags that are carried by a unit to signify their affiliation and branch of service. 

"We are really happy to put on a new event that can help bring awareness to a tragic epidemic that we have in our culture," Mike Considine, organizer of the ruck march and SSgt. in the Iowa Air National Guard said.  "We hope it brings better understanding to the issue that some veterans face on a daily basis."
