8th Annual Crops Day Offers Strategies for Water & Crop Management

Farmers and ag professionals should make plans to attend  the "8th Annual Crops Day," which will be held at Dakota Electric Association in Farmington on Tuesday, March 18th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

 A growing number of Minnesota farmers are relying on irrigation to ensure they can produce a crop when the weather turns dry. Jason Moeckel oversees the monitoring and analysis of water resources for the Department of Natural Resources and will be a keynote speaker at the Dakota County crops day. He will discuss the current status and future implications for irrigation as it affects the sustainability of groundwater and surface water supplies in areas of Minnesota such as Dakota County.

Dr. Fabian Fernandez, Extension Soil Scientist, U of M will discuss the role of additives, extenders, and other technologies for nitrogen management. Since nitrogen fertilizer losses are a major concern with heavy rainfall events. Dr. Bob Koch, Extension Entomologist, U of M will present a review of 2013 soybean insect infestations and updates on research for sustainable soybean insect control methods. Dave Nicolai, Regional Extension Educator-Crops will provide current recommendations for weed control in corn and soybeans. Brad Becker, Senior Resource Conservationist, SWCD and Michelle Wohlers, District Conservationist, NRCS will discuss conservation opportunities available to Dakota County farmers in 2014. Jill Trescott, Groundwater Protection Supervisor, Dakota County will provide an overview of Dakota County/Minnesota Department of Agriculture's 'Targeted Townships'Nitrate Sampling Project: Results and Trends. Finally, Mike Plutowski, Dakota Electric Energy Service Representative, will complete the morning program with information about energy conservation programs offered to producers.

Lunch and a trade show will follow the morning program.  While there is no charge for the event,  preregistration is requested by March 18th.  Sponsors for the "8th Annual Crops Day" include Dakota Electric Association, Southeast Irrigators Association, Kimmes-Bauer Well Drilling, University of Minnesota Extension and Dakota County.

The event will be held at Dakota Electric Association, located at 4300 220th St. W,  Farmington, Minnesota 55024 and is open to the public.
