Dairy Workshop to be held at Wolf Creek Dairy, Dundas

Dairy producers, employees and others interested in dairy production are invited to the University of Minnesota Extension Dairy Team "Successful Dairy Systems Summer Field Days". There are a variety of different field days available throughout the summer ranging in topics from organic dairy production and automatic calf feeders to manure/ nutrient management. The local dairy field day is being held on Wednesday, August 6 at Wolf Creek Dairy located at 1445 120th Street E, Dundas. Registration is free and the field day will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The University of Minnesota Extension teams with the Upper Midwest Agricultural Safety and Health Center to sponsor the education portion of the event with a special thanks to Dairy Profitability Enhancement Program for providing the meal.

The dairy has 6 FT and 8 PT employees who help Paul and Barb. The field day will begin with an overview of the dairy operation by the Liebensteins followed by discussion and demonstration on dairy stockmanship by Dr. Riki Sorge, UMN Assistant Professor, Dairy Production Medicine and Dr. Marcia Endres, UMN Professor, Dairy Management.  Stockmanship focuses on the handling interactions between humans and cows and includes low-stress handling techniques.  After lunch the topics will be worker health and safety with Dr. Bruce Alexander, UMN Professor, Division of Environmental Health Sciences, School of Public Health and a brief employee relationship and management discussion with local Agricultural Extension Educator Karen Anderson, followed by an optional tour of the dairy.
