Don Christensen, General Manager for Costco in Burnsville received the 2011 Business Champion Award at the Dakota-Scott Workforce Investment Board’s (WIB) annual legislative and awards event held Dec. 16 at the Burnsville Performing Arts Center.

The Business Champion Award recognizes an outstanding company that also uses WorkForce Center services such as job fairs, job postings or counselors.

Costco opened their new store in Nov. 2010. Before opening, they worked with the Burnsville WorkForce Center to recruit, interview and hire their workforce. They ended up conducting more than 3,000 interviews and hiring 220 employees using the Workforce Center location and connections. Since opening on Nov. 22, the company is setting records for the number of new members—totaling more than 30,000 already.

“Costco has certainly been a huge boost to the area's retail mix and it was a significant business for Burnsville to land. Costco's rapid growth in new memberships in just one year demonstrates that they're attracting a lot of people to the area," notes Daron Van Helden, President of the Burnsville Chamber of Commerce.

Past recipients of the Business Champion Award include: Goodrich Sensor Systems, Burnsville; UPS, Eagan; ConAgra Foods, Inc. - Store Brands, Lakeville; Waterous, South St. Paul; Frontier Communications, Burnsville; Grazzini Brothers, Eagan; Permac Industries, Burnsville; St. Gertrudes, Shakopee; Paychex, Mendota Heights; and Despatch Industries, Lakeville.
