Dakota County Board declares August Community Gardening Month

Gardening provides great exercise, reduces stress and gives people access to fresh fruits and vegetables. On Aug. 10, the Dakota County Board of Commissioners declared the month of August to be Community Gardening Month in Dakota County.

The number of community gardens in Dakota County is growing. Currently there are at least 20 community gardens in the County—nine of those received funding from Dakota County through the Minnesota Department of Health's Statewide Health Improvement Program. More than 620 people helped plant, harvest and promote the nine grant-funded community gardens throughout Dakota County.

Eight gardens in Dakota County will be featured during a Parade of Community Gardens on Saturday, Aug. 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The parade features 66 gardens throughout the Twin Cities. More information and garden location are available at www.gardeningmatters.org. Many of the gardens featured in the Parade of Community Gardens have activities for kids, treats, music and opportunities to learn about and get involved in community gardening.
