Back in the 40's, 50's, and some 60's rollerskating was a big time recreation along with dancing. Lakefield, Minnesota had a roller rink that attracted hundreds of teenagers and young couples. The rink had wood flooring that was made of Maplewood I think. At the rink you could rent clamp-on skates or wear your own if you were lucky enough to own a pair. The pair people wore usually had colorful tassles on the toes. Those people were usually the ones that were the best skaters and skated backwards also.

Two people skating together to a popular tune was really "poetry in motion." Many people met, dated, and sometimes got married. Three of my four sisters met their mates at the Lakefield Roller Rink in the 40's.

4-H groups, church groups and countless others had nights of skating that were enjoyed by all.

For some reason the skating scene faded over the years and other recreational activities took over. Perhaps it was the Drive-in Movies that took on popularity or dances, but rollerskating today is pretty much a fond memory of days gone by.

A "hotbed" for rollerskating back in the 50's was Arnold's Park, Iowa. They had TWO roller rinks and were filled to capacity during the summer months with visitors from all over the area enjoying the rinks and meeting new skating friends.

Sadly to say, the Lakefield Roller Rink is long gone and the two rinks in Arnold's Park are history also.

As I mentioned earlier, other attractions have taken over, but the skating scene was one to behold at the time.

There are roller skating rinks today, but the floors are made of smooth concrete with fancy painted surfaces. The number of roller rinks is geatly reduced from the days back in the late 30's, 40's, 50's and some of the 60's, but young people have other outlets to meet others. Some of it is though the use of the computer, but "live" face to face meeting is really where it's at. There is no making up stories about how good one is or how rich they are, it's one on one- face to face meetings that tell and show the other person who you really are.

Rollerskating provided the opportunity to meet, greet and pursue the love of your life. It doesn't get any better than that...
